It all begins with GAIN. Gain is the answer to a great start. Happy Mixing. Earl
Compression doesn't need to be complex...
There's no such thing as a "Perfect Vocal Setting"
But here's a starting point that will get you going.
Don't start mixing until you tweak the incoming gain on each channel
Never crank your channel gain all the way up. Adjust to -18db.
Compression helps turn up and down the loudest and softest parts of a song. For a vocalist, it automatically does this for the sound engineer instead of having to ride the fader. To help control a vocalist who is a dynamically consistent vocalist, start with a ratio of 2:1 or 3:1. For the vocalist who is very dynamic, use a higher ratio such as 5:1 to 8:1 to help grab those power spikes and keep them under control.
Don't ever think you're done... Mixing never stops. It's okay to backup and listen to what you have so far, but never say "It's All Great"
Don't hesitate to share what you're hearing with the rest of your team. Critical Listening isn't just for you. We're in this together. Always Share...
Ask for HELP! Never feel you're above asking for help. I always ask my other sound engineers to maintain the mix that I've set and make it better. They always do. Remember, others hear things differently. It doesn't mean they're wrong. If they make the mix better than what you had, Praise God. "EXCELLENCE FOR CHRIST"
